What to do if you fall ill when traveling abroad

Losing a bag in transit or misplacing important travel documents can be a real nightmare. Even more nightmarish: falling ill during a trip. God forbid this happens, but if it does, here are some useful tips and advice.

Basic tips if you face medical problems abroad
1. You should ensure medical insurance is taken when you are travelling abroad. Preferably go for a cashless policy. That way, if you are admitted to a hospital abroad, the hospital will be able to get in touch which your insurance provider for reimbursement without too much of a hassle for you.

2. As soon as you are admitted to a hospital, get your family member/travel companion to contact the insurance provider. Generally, the insurance provider will have a 24hours helpline number. So register your claim and get a claims number.

3. During and immediately on discharge from the hospital, make sure that you give regular updates to the insurance provider. You do generally have 30 days after the policy expires to give the requisite details, but it is advisable not to wait till the nth moment.

4. Supposing an accident occurs or you are taken ill during your travel abroad, your flight itinerary will change. What will you do? You will simply buy a new ticket. Most people don’t know this tip: you can use the same travel policy to get a reimbursement for the penalty you had to pay for changing your flight. Alternatively, you can get the difference in price between your old ticket and your new one.
