How to track bags lost in transit while travelling by air
Quite a few travellers have had the horrendous experience of losing bags, even all their luggage while flying. Even in cases where there is no stopover to catch a connecting flight and it is a straight flight from one point to another, this problem has occurred. It is thus a good idea to follow some very basic steps before and during losing bags in transit.
Basic Tips to tracking luggage
1. Ensure that you take insurance for loss or theft of your baggage. Do this at the time of booking your trip itself.
2. After you pack your bags, it is a good idea to take individual photos of all your bags, including your hand luggage. This may sound a little overboard, but believe me it may just help to track your lost baggage.
3. Since most baggage look exactly the same, it is advisable to put some distinct marker to it. For example, I usually attach a brightly coloured ribbon to the handle of the bag. Then you can take the photo of it.
4. When your bag is lost, you need to file a complaint right away with the assistance of the airline staff. Don’t wait to reach your hotel and then contact the airlines, no matter how late it is or how tired you are. Just remain within the airport premises itself until you get a claim & tracking ID.
5. Make sure too that you get the contact phone numbers of the airline authorities and airport authorities who deal with missing baggage.
6. Most people tend to throw away their airline tickets as soon as they exit from the airport. Don’t. Keep the ticket along with your baggage claim tags. The ticket is proof of your flight at the time the luggage was lost.
